28-year-old singer/actress Christina Milian will be a baby mama next month to a little girl with her musician hubby The Dream.

We just got off the phone with a laughing and upbeat Christina and learned that she’ll make a big effort as soon as possible after the birth to get back into the top shape she was in for her cheerleading film Bring It On: Fight to the Finish.

If you missed this spicy, feisty film on DVD, the movie premieres on ABC Family this coming Sunday the 17th at 8:00 PM Eastern time.

A laughing Christina told us she just loved getting a big say in casting her love interest in the film, hot and buff Cody Longo who has since appeared on the TV series “Make It or Break It” and she has advice for being the “new kid” in school.

Here’s the scoop:

What are your plans for after your baby girl comes?

Christina. I plan on getting back into the studio this summer. I had an album that was already made but since I’ve taken this time off, I’ll go back and re-do some of the music and make some new songs and find my new inspiration and, by the end of the year, come out with a new album. With acting, as soon as I can get in the gym and work out, I’ll be back into doing auditions and acting.

What made you want to play a cheerleader?

Christina: I was very athletic growing up and has this dream of being a cheerleader in high school and never really got the opportunity because I was a young actor and singer and didn’t get to enjoy the experience of school. So “Bring It On” was perfect. I could be a teen again.

Training must have been tough.

Christina: It was full-on, five days a week with (choreographer) Tony G and
Tony Gonzales. I had to learn over 20 choreographed cheerleading [stunts/dances]. Three to four a day and practice, practice. We’d go running and do sit-ups in the morning to wear those cheerleading outfits. Thank goodness I worked out so my stamina was up. It was a lot to remember though. The challenge was fun.

You are the star of the film so did you get to pick your love interest Tony Longo?

Christina: I got to audition all the other actors with the casting director.

It was fun to audition the guys for my love interest. I had a lot of say in that. I was like “You guys have to go with this guy!” I was pressuring them because they didn’t know who they wanted. I was like ‘He’s cute! He can handle the chemistry’. He even came into the audition with a basketball and I thought he had a good swagger about him that worked well for the character.

What place in life does cheerleading have today and what does it really do for a teen girl?

Christina: It’s so different than it was. A lot of activities are being taken out of schools now but that’s one thing I’ve never heard being taken out. I think it’s important. I think it’s good for your self-esteem, good for confidence and athleticism as well. I don’t think a lot of people realize how athletic it is as a sport as well. Our parents’ parents could have been cheerleaders and it goes from generation to generation. Now, it’s not just a girl thing. It’s a co-ed thing too. It’s a great after school activity as well.

How could you relate to your character Lina who moves from the hood to Malibu? She was top girl, then, she’s not anymore.

Christina: I related to her in a lot of ways. I was never the top girl at school and I moved around a lot because of my career. I made a big move from Maryland to California to pursue my career. When I first got to California, the school was nothing like my old school. It was kind of the opposite from the movie. I lived in a suburban area there then, in L.A. the school had a fence around it and there were gangs.

It was “don’t wear this! Don’t wear that”. So it’s kind of funny that me and Lina are opposite in that way. It’s hard to fit into a new situation where nobody really gets you. One thing I admire about Lina is she doesn’t really care what anybody thinks. She helps other people. Lina loves to perform and she’s a go getter. More feisty than me but I understood her.

Did you feel that “new kid” high school pressure then?

Christina: If you are the new kid, I find that’s really hard. My first week of high school was the worst. The movie does capture how high school is and what it takes to fit in. I’d say make your own friendships and your own group of friends. It’s not about being like the popular person.

Why should TeenHollywood visitors watch this movie?

Christina: If you are a “Bring It On” fan you need to bring it and watch this movie because it’s the best one ever. It’s got great fusion as far as Latin and Hip Hop, lots of great choreography, cute boys and great punch lines.
